Baptism

What is Baptism?

  • It is immersion in water (opposed to sprinkling or pouring)

Baptism by immersion, we go under the water, we rise up and are Baptised.   This symbolises the washing away of sin (Acts 22:16) and our union with Jesus Christ through his Death = Immersion, Burial = Submersion and Resurrection = Emergence. (Romans 6:3-4)

  • It’s a public declaration of faith

This is a public dedication of faith in Jesus Christ in front of friends and family.  (Matthew 5:16)

  • It’s an act of obedience

Jesus Christ commanded it. As a believer we follow him in obedience. (Matthew 28:19)

  • It’s a choice

As a Believer we have made a choice to follow Jesus.  No one else can make this choice for us.  We can be guided and told about Jesus, but only we can choose to follow him. (John 14:6). Through baptism we publicly proclaim our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

Why be Baptised?

  • Jesus was baptised and we follow His example. (Mat 3:13-17 & Luke 3:21-22)
  • Jesus commanded it. As a believer we follow him in obedience. (Matthew 28:19)

Do I have to be baptised to be saved?

  • No, only through Jesus Christ, by God’s grace can you be saved. (John 3:16)
  •  If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

If Baptism isn’t required for my salvation, then why be baptised?

As believes we take Christ at His word. He told us to do it so we follow in obedience.  It’s also a way by which we show those in our world we have been saved. It’s a testament and example to other.
